More Autonomous Cars Being Tested in South Korea

SEOUL, Jan. 19 (Korea Bizwire) — The mileage for autonomous car test drives has surpassed 190,000 kilometers in South Korea over the last two years.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on Thursday that a total of 30 autonomous vehicles from 17 organizations have been undergoing testing since 2016, when test drives for research purposes were first authorized.

So far, companies and institutions that have tested autonomous cars include Hyundai Motor, Seoul National University, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and Naver Labs, to name a few.

Though the mileage of autonomous test drives was estimated at only 26,000 kilometers by the end of 2016, an increasing number of companies got on board after restrictions were lifted.

“We plan to build a data sharing center by the end of this year, which will create an environment where research centers can share information on autonomous driving with each other,” said Kim Chae-gyu, director general of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles Policy at the transport ministry.
