Seoul, July 06 (Korea Biz Wire) As more and more people use the smartphone, a higher percentage of smartphone users show the tendency of deteriorating memory. According to survey results announced by DooIt Survey, an online survey company, as much as 33.7 percent of 5,823 respondents said they do not remember the phone numbers of their parents and siblings, exhibiting the serious problem of “digital dementia.”
To a question “How many phone numbers do you remember other than those of your immediate family?” 16.7 percent said “None,” followed by 36.2 percent who replied “One or two,” and 31.3 percent with an answer “Three to five.” The percentage of respondents who said they remember more than six phone numbers was only 15.6 percent.
To other questions such as “Do you remember what kind of dish you had for last night’s dinner?” “Do you have any song lyrics you remember to the end?” and “Do you use mental math in everyday life?” less than 50 percent of respondents said in the affirmative. A DooIt Survey official said people nowadays rely so much on their smartphones for everything from phone numbers to small pieces of information that they tend not to train their memory any more.
