More Pets Flying This Year

SEOUL, Sept. 13 (Korea Bizwire)A growing number of Koreans are bringing their dogs and cats with them when they travel by air.

According to Korean Air Lines Co., 6,020 pets flew on its international flights and 12,775 pets travelled on domestic flights in the passenger cabin from January to August.

During the same period, 3,787 pets took international flights and 2,692 pets took domestic flights in the aircraft cargo hold, the national flag carrier said.

Compared with the January to August period last year, the number of carry-on pets has jumped by 35.6 percent and the number of pets transported in the aircraft cargo hold jumped by 25.7 percent.

Asiana Airlines Inc. transported 15,278 pets on international and domestic flights between January and August this year, up slightly from 15,038 pets last year.

Low-cost carriers also saw the number of pet passengers between January and August this year exceed the pre-pandemic record in 2019.
