SEOUL, Mar. 28 (Korea Bizwire) – Starting next year, students in Busan with three or more siblings will receive priority in admission to their preferred general high schools, the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education announced on March 27.
In a meeting of the Committee for High School Admissions for the 2025 academic year, held on March 19, the education office decided to expand the quota for priority admission of students from families with three or more children applying to general high schools.
The move is part of the education office’s multifaceted approach to address Busan’s challenges, including low birth rates, talent drain, and an aging population, through educational initiatives.
Under the new policy, students entering their third year of middle school this year who have two or more siblings, including those from blended families or adopted, can be admitted to their preferred general high school up to 20 percent of the total enrollment quota, if they choose to do so.
Previously, priority admission for families with three or more children was limited to the second child and beyond, and applied only if siblings were already enrolled in the first or second year of the same high school.
“We hope this initiative, reflecting our education office’s commitment, will contribute significantly to making Busan a better place for raising and educating children,” said Busan’s superintendent of education, Ha Yoon-su.
