More Than 10 Animals Get Killed On Seoul Roads a Day, Most of Them Cats

SEOUL, May 20 (Korea Bizwire)More than 10,000 animals were killed on Seoul roads over the last three years, according to Saenuri Party member Lee No-geun on May 18. The number of road kills in Seoul was 11,869 from 2012 to 2014. An average of 10.7 animals were killed on the road every day.

Among the 11,869 deaths, 81 percent of road kills were cats, while 12 percent and 7 percent were dogs and birds & wild animals respectively.

Gangnam District‘s roads were the deadliest for animals, with 15 road kills a day, while 12 cases a day were reported in Guro, Geumcheon, Nowon and Seongdong respectively. Gangseo District and Gwangjin District saw 8 and 5 cases per day respectively, while Eunpyeong District was safest, with 0.2 cases per day.

Citizens can report road kill through the 120 Dasan Call Center, and special teams will be dispatched to the scene to collect the animals.

Lee said that the Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon has been silent on the road kill issue, although Seoul has been presenting various animal welfare measures so far. Lee urged Seoul to employ some measure to address the killing of animals on the road.
