SEOUL, July 3 (Korea Bizwire) — The transformation of multiplex chains, shifting from “viewing theater” to “participatory theaters,” a trend that began during the COVID-19 pandemic, is accelerating.
The Seongsu branch of Megabox recently launched an open platform called Meta Ground by renovating one of its screens.
The new platform showcases a variety of media arts using a large-sized media wall that measures 6 meters tall and 22 meters wide, while also creating four pop-up spaces in a stepping arrangement.
Last Saturday, a pop-up store for the latest Hollywood action blockbuster “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” opened.
Movie watchers can experience shooting and motorcycle driving, similar to the main character of the movie, while also having the opportunity to take photos with the backdrop of the movie set.
Lotte Cinema opened an experience-type exhibition hall called Random Square within the Lotte Cinema World Tower last month.
The first exhibition was Random Diversity: The Movie, where movie watchers can experience a series of processes that can happen to movie actors.
Meanwhile, CJ CGV has been operating a climbing gym called Peakers since last year. CGV Piccadilly 1958 was the first to open a climbing gym, followed by CGV Guro and Shinchon Artreon.
“It’s no longer sufficient for theaters to rely solely on good movies to attract spectators in today’s media market filled with numerous platforms and a variety of content,” said a movie industry official.
“Theaters now share the view that they should transform into spaces where people can engage in activities that cannot be replicated at home.”
