SEOUL, Aug. 23 (Korea Bizwire)Musical production companies, which used to primarily host extended performances in Seoul before heading to regional shows, are breaking their longstanding tradition by opting to debut their shows outside the capital.

“Les Miserables” and “Sister Act” are set to premiere in Busan in October and November, respectively, before subsequently being performed in Seoul, according to industry sources.

In January, “Cats” initially launched in Gimhae, Sejong, and Busan before making its way to Seoul.

The trend is attributed to the fact that cities beyond the capital now boast suitable facilities for accommodating musicals.

Furthermore, the growing demand for such performances is compelling production companies to shift away from Seoul.

Back in 2016, Daegu extended an invitation to stage “Wicked” at the 2,000-seat Keimyung Arts Center.

Meanwhile, Busan saw the inauguration of the 1,500-seat Dream Theatre in 2019, which specializes in hosting musical performances. This establishment has created an environment conducive to housing prolonged musical runs.

According to a report from the Korea Arts Management Service, “Phantom of the Opera” secured the second spot at the box office in the stage performance market during early 2023, when performed in Busan.

Regarding “Sister Act,” preparations will commence with rehearsals in Busan come September.

This will precede a tour spanning 15 cities, followed by a worldwide journey throughout the 2025-2026 season, encompassing six or seven Asian countries.

Choosing to produce musicals in Busan offers notable cost advantages. The city features a conveniently accessible port for transportation and more affordable options for accommodations and rehearsal studio rentals.
