Mussel Adhesive Strong Enough to Endure Heavy Waves Turns Out to Have Hemostatic Effect

DAEJEON, April 20 (Korea Bizwire)A South Korean research team has proved that a mussel-inspired adhesive material has a hemostatic effect.

Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) said that they had confirmed the hemostatic effect of an adhesive developed by replicating a mussel byssus in a study conducted with blood clot patients.

The byssus, a bundle of fibers used by mussels to cling on hard surfaces, has strong adhesive power.

The research team identified that the catecholamine adhesive material contained in the mussel byssus forms an adhesive layer through a combination with plasma proteins such as albumin in the blood.

A solid hemostatic layer was formed after the hemostatic agent made of catecholamine ingredient was tested on animals with blood clot disorder and patients who bled after lung transplants or other surgical procedures.
