SEOUL, July 8 (Korea Bizwire) – A North Korean martial arts manual dating back to the 18th century has been listed as a UNESCO heritage, the country’s state media said Thursday.

The U.N. organization listed the manual called “Mu Ye Do Bo Tong Ji” on its World Regional Register for Asia-Pacific at a meeting of the UNESCO Memory of the World Regional Committee for Asia-Pacific in Vietnam in May, the Korean Central News Agency said in an English dispatch monitored in Seoul.

The book was illustrated by the famous Korean folk painter Kim Hong-do (1745-1806) and published in April 1790 upon the instruction of the then king of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), the report said.

“It gives a lucid explanation of different unarmed martial arts, swordsmanship, spearsmanship, cudgelmanship, horsemanship and other Korean martial art movements as well as some movements of Chinese and Japanese martial arts,” it said.

The movements formed the basis of the Korean martial art taekwondo, it added.
