SEOUL, Jun. 21 (Korea Bizwire) – The exhibition halls of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s Deoksugung branch have been captured in vivid virtual reality (VR) footage, transporting viewers into the heart of a Korean embroidery showcase.
As viewers move their smartphones in any direction, they feel as if they are strolling through the museum galleries, able to gaze upon the exhibited artworks up close with striking realism.
The museum announced on June 20 the release of “MMCA VR – Embroidery Exhibition,” a VR video that recreates the “Korean Modern and Contemporary Embroidery: Birds Trying to Catch the Sun” exhibition currently on display at the Deoksugung venue in Seoul.
While the MMCA has been producing VR exhibition videos since 2021, this year’s offering stands out for its use of ultra-high-definition 360-degree cameras and diverse visual effects. These enhancements allow users to experience a seamless virtual tour of the galleries simply by moving their smartphones or touching the screen.
The highlight artworks have been meticulously filmed, capturing the intricate textures of the embroidered threads, while graphic overlays provide artwork titles and descriptions.
With a total runtime of around 10 minutes, the VR video features English narration and Korean and English subtitles, making it accessible to international audiences.
The VR exhibition tour is available for viewing on the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s YouTube channel.
Throughout the second half of this year, the museum plans to produce and release an additional six VR exhibition tours, covering shows on architecture, ceramics, and other themes.
Kim Sung-hee, Director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, described the VR project as “a global content initiative that allows anyone around the world to vividly experience our exhibitions while international interest in Korean art is at its peak.” She added, “The MMCA will continue to lead the development of high-quality art content.”
