SEOUL, Dec.15 (Korea Bizwire)Following Google and Facebook, Naver is also set to launch 360 degree video services.

The Korean web giant announced on December 14 that it will be launching 360 degree virtual reality (VR) video services within the month.

Instead of watching videos taken from the perspective of the person making the recording, 360 degree videos allow viewers to choose different directions or points of view to watch the video from, making selections using a keyboard or mouse.

As the development of VR content is on the rise, the start of the new service appears to be part of Naver’s attempts to keep pace in the changing IT landscape.

Google has already started to support the upload of 360 degree videos on YouTube. Some of the clips have already attracted more than a million views.

Facebook has also shown enthusiasm for 360 degree video services, with the purchase of VR device maker Oculus in 2014. Recently, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, uploaded a 360 degree video of Pyongyang, North Korea on his Facebook page, creating a stir.

Naver also revealed that it will support technology that will allow for multi-live broadcasting through drones and action cams through its live streaming application ‘V’.

Based on the video content, scene extraction technologies will be applied. As a result, searching for scenes in a video will be possible in various ways. Other than time codes, searching for scenes using audio or subtitles in the video will also be possible.

Security technologies that will keep content secure will also be implemented. Watermark features will be provided to prevent the illegal usage of content, and if videos are leaked, they will be able to be tracked using the watermark.
