SEOUL, April 24 (Korea Bizwire) – The Navy and the Marine Corps have launched a large-scale amphibious landing exercise in the southeastern coastal city of Pohang earlier this week to sharpen their joint operational capabilities, the armed forces said.
Some 3,200 troops are taking part in the regular brigade-level drills that kicked off in areas near Pohang, 260 kilometers southeast of Seoul, on Tuesday for a 10-day run, according to the Navy and the Marine Corps.
A total of 17 warships, including the ROKS Marado amphibious landing ship, 19 aircraft, including the P-3 maritime patrol aircraft and the KF-16 fighter jet, as well as 22 amphibious landing vehicles have been mobilized for the exercise, they said.
For the first time, the exercise will involve training aimed at responding to enemy suicide drones and using drones to conduct reconnaissance operations prior to landing.
