SEOUL, Oct. 18 (Korea Bizwire) – Binge-watching, the practice of watching multiple episodes or an entire season of a TV series in one sitting, has become significantly more common than four years ago according to the results of a survey conducted by Netflix.
The streaming and VOD (video on demand) giant derived its data by identifying 8.4 million of its users who had a history of binge-watching at least once.
From 2012 through 2016, Netflix users who finished an entire series of episodes within 24 hours were labeled ‘binge-racers’.
The growth rate of binge-watchers has been stratospheric; 200,000 in 2013 grew to form a 4 million-strong binge watching population. By September this year, the number had climbed even higher to 5 million.
Globally, the most popular ‘binge show’ of choice was Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. In South Korea, Marvel’s The Defenders is most commonly selected for binge-watching.
Canada was found to be the country with the highest number of binge-watchers, with the show of choice identified as Trailer Park Boys.
