Netflix Has 1.53 mln Users in S. Korea: Data

SEOUL, Apr. 23 (Korea Bizwire)The number of South Korean users subscribing to U.S. video streaming platform Netflix Inc. has steadily increased to surpass the 1.5 million mark, mainly on the back of the popularity of original local content, industry data showed Tuesday.

Netflix is estimated to have 1.53 million paid active streaming subscribers as of March, compared with 900,000 users last December, 1.07 million in January and 1.14 million in February, according to the data compiled by industry tracker WiseApp.

The data showed that some 39 percent of Netflix users in the country are in their 20s, followed by 28 percent in their 30s and 17 percent in their 40s.

Netflix, which started as a video rental firm in 1997, currently has more than 139 million paid subscribers in over 190 countries enjoying original and licensed TV series, documentaries and feature films across a wide variety of genres and languages.

The company has recently produced more original programs in languages other than English as part of efforts to target audiences around the world.

“Kingdom,” Netflix’s first original Korean drama, was released in January. The six-episode zombie mystery thriller is set in Joseon, the last Korean dynasty, and was written by famed Korean screenwriter Kim Eun-hee, writer of the popular 2016 TV series “Signal.”
