SEOUL, Dec. 16 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s Ministry of Justice said Monday it has introduced an artificial intelligence–based behavior analysis system at the National Forensic Psychiatric Hospital to better identify early signs of violent or self-harming behavior among patients undergoing compulsory treatment.
The system monitors individuals with severe mental illness in real time, detecting actions that may indicate self-injury, agitation or aggression. Alerts are immediately relayed to medical staff, enabling earlier intervention and reducing the risk of escalation, the ministry said.
Officials noted that by collecting objective data on each patient’s behavioral patterns and underlying triggers, clinicians will be able to design more precise and effective treatment plans tailored to individual needs.
A ministry official said the AI-enabled, data-driven system is expected to significantly strengthen the treatment, rehabilitation and management framework for patients with developmental disabilities and other complex conditions.
