SEOUL, Feb. 14 (Korea Bizwire)Starting this year, universities will hold a gender sensitivity class about sexual harassment and sexual violence as part of orientation for college freshmen.

The Ministry of Education announced on Wednesday that it had recommended that universities implement these types of educational programs for new students.

The ministry has distributed operational guidelines to help universities regarding gender sensitivity, but last year’s ‘#MeToo’ movement has led to strengthened education on gender equality.

While most universities have broadened education on gender sensitivity, it refers to the ability to recognize situations where exclusion and discrimination occur as social and cultural factors.

The ministry recommended that universities use its content produced by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family or create their own.

During university orientation programs, students are expected to receive leaflets containing useful information about preventing sexual violence.

Furthermore, it was also recommended that pre-education be strengthened to prevent human rights violations and safety accidents such as forced drinking and other hazing of freshmen.

Meanwhile, the ministry will identify universities that hold orientation events with more than 1,000 students for more than two nights and will conduct a site inspection before the event.
