SEOUL, Sept. 29 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korean road safety authorities have adopted a new GPS system to better identify the location of callers reporting traffic accidents on highways.
According to the Korea Expressway Corporation on Wednesday, the highway call center has introduced a new GPS-based system that tracks down the location of those calling in to report on traffic accidents on highways much faster and more accurately.
The previous system, which relied on base stations owned by private mobile network providers often faced criticism over its inaccuracy and lack of information regarding location, which meant callers had to explain where they were on their own.
However, the new system is set to change the dynamics of reporting traffic accidents, as the location of callers will be automatically tracked down with their consent, allowing a swifter response to critical situations.
By gathering information using both base stations of telecom networks and GPS signals, accuracy will be improved.
At the same time, information regarding callers, including their whereabouts and journeys, will also be sent to the traffic situation room of the Korea Expressway Corporation.
