SEOUL, Feb. 11 (Korea Bizwire) – The newly established South Korean Embassy in Havana, Cuba, has launched its website as it has begun its activities in earnest, pledging to expand consular services and seek bilateral cooperation with the host country.

South Korea opened its embassy in Cuba last month, a year after the two countries forged diplomatic relations that took the world by surprise, including Cuba’s Cold War-era ally, North Korea.

In his greeting uploaded to the website on Tuesday, Ambassador to Cuba Lee Ho-yul said his embassy plans to “strengthen the protection of Koreans overseas by expanding consular services for our nationals visiting and residing in Cuba.”

The envoy also mentioned the Korean settlers in Cuba, who moved from Mexico in 1921, pledging that the embassy will engage in efforts to protect their rights.

The embassy also plans to seek bilateral cooperation with Cuba across various fields, including the economy, trade, as well as social and cultural matters.

“The official diplomatic relationship between South Korea and Cuba is still in its nascent stages … but I will work toward advancing bilateral human exchanges to a higher level,” Lee said.
