SEOUL, March 30 (Korea Bizwire)A South Korean research team has developed a new smartphone app that can check the change in the amount of urine produced by analyzing the sound of urination.

A joint research team from the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and the Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital announced on Wednesday that the newly-developed smartphone app can calculate the amount of urine produced by analyzing the sound generated when urine touches the surface of water.

The new technology is based on the concept that the intensity of urine excretion is proportional to the pressure generated by the flow rate of urine passing through the urethra per unit of time.

In a study of 57 patients with urination problems, the error in the amount of urine within the bladder, measured before urination using the methods of ultrasonic inspection and the smartphone app stood at 16 cubic centimeters on average.

Considering that the amount of urine produced during a typical bathroom visit for male adults averaged about 200 cubic centimeters, this level of error is negligible, the research team said.
