SEOUL, Apr. 8 (Korea Bizwire) – A rare spotted seal pup has been born at Seoul Grand Park, offering a bright spot of conservation success amid mounting threats to marine life.

The pup, named Bangul, is the third of its kind born at the park since 2018, when it became the first facility in South Korea to successfully breed the endangered mammals. Bangul, a male, was born last month to parents Jebudo and Eun, weighing a robust 12.5 pounds (5.7 kilograms).

In just two weeks, the fluffy white newborn has already grown to 30 pounds (13.6 kg) as his distinctive spotted coat begins to emerge from beneath his thick natal fur.

“It’s an exciting development to welcome another healthy spotted seal into the world,” said Choi Hong-yeon, director of Seoul Grand Park. “We’re delighted to share this joyful spring news and will do everything possible to ensure Bangul’s stable growth, sharing his journey through various content.”

Also known as the larga seal, the spotted seal is classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The marine mammals, known for their striking coats, inhabit the waters around the Korean peninsula as well as parts of China, Japan and Russia.

At the park, the playful Bangul can be seen enthusiastically swimming around his enclosure before retiring for naps on the floor. He’s also fond of interactive toys crafted by zookeepers to stimulate his inquisitive nature.

His attentive mother Eun remains by his side, safeguarding the young pup as he finds his way. To allow for nursing and introductions to solid foods, Bangul will remain in an off-exhibit area until the end of April before going on public display.
