New System Uses Smartphones and Drones to Measure Fine Dust

SEOUL, Jan. 11 (Korea Bizwire)A new method of measuring the amount of scattering dust using photos taken by smartphones or drones has been developed by the National Institute of Environmental Research.

The Ministry of Environment said it will come up with an examination standard for measuring scattering dust using the new optical method.

Scattering dust usually occurs at construction sites where there are no proper ventilation points. Severe dust scattering can raise the concentration of airborne fine dust particles.

The new method analyzes the opacity of the dust in a photo or a video to determine its quantity. The analysis software has also been developed by the institute.

Scattering dust has been a difficult problem at construction sites without standard means to track down and manage its source.

“We will set relevant standards and restrictions in place to significantly reduce the amount of airborne fine dust that results from dust scattering,” said Kim Beop-jeong, a policy officer at the Ministry of Environment.
