POHANG, Dec. 12 (Korea Bizwire)Smartphones can now be used to monitor how a fish grows inside a fish farm.

The Pohang University of Science and Technology announced on Wednesday that the Gyeongbuk Sea Grant Center, the university’s affiliate research institution, has developed a wireless underwater camera system.

Up until now, fish farm owners weren’t able to conduct real-time monitoring remotely since they used closed-circuit television.

A new device from the center allows them to monitor the waters in real-time and view the footage remotely.

The system is capable of monitoring 360 degrees by using a pantoscopic camera, and can be submerged as deep as 100 meters.

Users can monitor live videos of the underwater farm if they are within a 10-kilometer radius of where the camera has been installed.

Since many fish farms are located out in the open sea, the system can be powered on and off remotely via smartphone. If connected to a solar panel, it can be used without maintenance for over a month.

The research team, jointly with the Gyeongbuk Fisheries Technology Center, designed the system in such a way that it does not damage the nets underwater before putting it to the test at fish farms in Pohang and Uljin.

“The system is expected to help the fish farms manage their stock by enabling systematic observation of the fish, temperature, and the surrounding environment,” said Yu Seon-cheol, head of the Gyeongbuk Sea Grant Center.
