North Korea’s SNS Channels Gain Popularity

SEOUL, July 24 (Korea Bizwire) It has been reported that the number of subscribers to North Korean propaganda SNS channels is soaring.

As of July 24, there were 11,756 subscribers to a YouTube channel named “uriminzokkiri.” The channel features propaganda video clips about North Korea, and is run by its Committee for Peaceful Reunification.

Compared to the 1,903 subscribers in October 2010, its subscriber base jumped more than six fold, and the total number of views surpassed 12.6 million.

As for the committee’s Twitter feed, there are currently over 18,000 followers, more than double the 10,377 in 2010.

Uriminzokkiri is a North Korean state-controlled website that provides news from North Korea’s Central News Agency. The site has also been distributing information through Twitter, YouTube and Flickr since August 2010. While its YouTube channel has become popular, its Flickr account only has 58 followers.

Meanwhile, Today’s Joseon, North Korea’s official website for external propaganda, has only 66 YouTube subscribers, and only 8,179 total views. Its number of Twitter and Flickr followers are a mere 24 and 9 respectively. Today’s Joseon Flickr follows nine accounts, including South Korea’s no copyright photo site Allowto (www.allowto.co.kr).
