SEOUL, Feb. 21 (Korea Bizwire)The number of monthly users of the U.S. social media network Facebook, once the most popular social media service for Korean users, has been on a downward trend for several years.

Facebook’s domestic monthly active users (MAU), based on data from both Android and iOS devices, stood at 10,056,845 last month, down about 32 percent compared to the figure marked in May 2020, according to data by local market analysis firm IGA Works.

In the nation’s social media user rankings, Facebook was positioned at No. 3 last month, far behind Instagram (No. 1) and Naver Band (No. 2).

In May 2020, when IGA Works launched a combined analysis of the two major app markets, Facebook’s MAU stood at 14,870,910. Last month’s figure was about 32 percent lower than that.

Market watchers said that one of the key factors behind the decrease in Facebook’s MAU is the increasing preference towards short texts and videos as well as image content.

According to a survey conducted by the Korea Press Foundation, the share of elementary, middle and high school students who said they had used Facebook slipped to 46.1 percent last year from 80.3 percent in 2019.
