Number of Startup Employees Up 9.7 pct: Data

SEOUL, Aug. 10 (Korea Bizwire)The number of employees hired by South Korean startups rose by about 10 percent in one year, data showed Tuesday.

According to the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, the number of employees hired by the nation’s 34,362 startups totaled 761,082 as of the end of June, up 67,605 from a year ago.

The employment growth rate for startups stood at 9.7 percent, about three times higher than that of South Korean companies in general.

In particular, the employment growth rate of the companies that attracted venture capital investments stood at 40.5 percent, more than 12 times higher than that of companies in general.

“Over the past year, the number of employment insurance subscribers among young people increased by 29,948, of which startups accounted for more than half,” a ministry official said.

The number of startups established in the first half of this year stood at 92, with these companies hiring a total of 836 employees. The top 10 startups in light of employment growth increased payrolls by 4,048 over the past year.

The number of employees hired by the 14 unicorns included in this analysis totaled 10,942, up 39.4 percent year on year.
