SEOUL, June 5 (Korea Bizwire)The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on Thursday that it will open the Korea-Indonesia Ocean Expert Cultivation Program at Indonesia’s Bandung University.

This program is aimed at fostering as many as 70 Indonesian students as professionals with master’s degrees in the areas of ocean research and analysis by 2020.

Under this program, Indonesia’s first-ever marine experts with master’s degrees specializing in South Korea’s ocean science and technology are expected to graduate by the end of 2020.

This program is a part of the ministry’s official development assistance (ODA) activities in Indonesia.

Starting from last year, the ministry has earmarked a budget of 5 billion won (US$4.10 million) to transfer South Korea’s expertise on ocean research to Jakarta and Cirebon in Indonesia.

Jakarta and Cirebon are some of the areas undergoing the fastest rise in sea level due to climate change.

To cope with serious coastal erosion happening in these areas, the Indonesian government has asked its Korean counterparts to transfer know-how on ocean research and analysis.

The ministry plans to establish a coastal topography research system with focus on the Cirebon region this year and launch research activities on the water depth of the coastal area and marine ecosystem there.
