SEOUL, May 26 (Korea Bizwire)A Korean research team has developed a core technology in realizing a super-mini display with high resolution.

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning announced on May 25 that a team led by Professor Lee Byeong-Ho and Dr. Yoon Han-Shik at Seoul University has developed a metal nanoparticle which enables only one color filter to transmit all colors.

Existing display technologies have been facing the fundamental problem of cramming three color filters into one display pixel, as existing color filters can only express one shade of color such as red or green.

As three color filters at minimum are required to comprise a pixel, associated technologies could not get past this spatial limit.

The team’s nanoparticle has a resonating space which houses various lights differing in wavelength and strength, and features a nanopore which works as a channel to selectively emit one of the housed lights.

Using the team’s nanoparticle, the size of one display pixel can be as small as a couple of micrometers. Existing display pixels range in size from tens to tens of hundreds of micrometers.

Display resolutions with the nanoparticle are also expected to be 50 times better than currently realized resolutions.

The team said that commercialization of the technology should be possible five or ten years from now.
