One-third of High School Students Experience Daily Violence: Survey

SEOUL, July 18 (Korea Bizwire)Almost one-third of high school violence victims are exposed to violence on an almost daily basis, a state-run institute said Monday.

According to a report released by the Korean Educational Development Institute, regional education offices nationwide conducted a survey last year involving 154,514 students from the fourth year of elementary school to the second year of high school.

Out of the participants, 1.6 percent (2,113 individuals) reported being victims of school violence.

Among the high school victims of school violence, 32 percent claimed to experience violence nearly every day.

Additionally, 23.6 percent of middle school students and 20 percent of elementary school students acknowledged being exposed to school violence in the past.

A majority of the victims (68.3 percent) stated that the perpetrators belonged to their own class. This response was consistent across all school levels and genders.

In terms of incident types, verbal abuse accounted for 69.1 percent of cases, followed by physical assault (27.3 percent), bullying (21.3 percent), cyber violence (13.9 percent), and sexual violence (9.5 percent).

Of the respondents, 66.4 percent believed that school violence occurred “as a joke or for no apparent reason.”
