Online Sales Hit All-Time High in July

SEJONG, Sept. 1 (Korea Bizwire) – Online shopping sales in South Korea jumped 17.4 percent on-year to hit a record high in July on upbeat demand for leisure and tourism bookings and electronic devices, a government report showed Thursday. 

Total online transactions reached 5.56 trillion won (US$4.98 billion) in the seventh month of 2016, compared with 4.74 trillion won a year earlier, according to the report compiled by Statistics Korea. 

The July figure surpassed the earlier record of 5.36 trillion won tallied in December last year and continued to stay over the 5 trillion-won level for three straight months. 

Purchases made through smartphones, tablets and other mobile gadgets also soared 36.9 percent on-year to 2.93 trillion won to account for 52.7 percent of all online sales in July, up slightly from the 52.2 percent share the previous month. 

In July, 1.13 trillion won worth of tour packages and reservations were sold online, up 15.2 percent from a year earlier, while sales of electronics vaulted 22.4 percent on-year to 712.9 billion won. 

Online purchases of cosmetics skyrocketed 46.3 percent on-year to 392.8 billion won, with those of garments rising 10.2 percent to 499.9 billion won.
