SEOUL, July 13 (Korea Bizwire) — After COVID-19 social distancing rules were lifted, South Korea’s major online travel and accommodation platforms have seen payments break records month after month.
Industry tracker WiseApp conducted a survey of Korean consumers over 20 years of age to check the value of payments they had made at online travel and accommodation platforms.
The survey showed that the estimated amount of payments made at Airbnb, Yanolja (and Daily Hotel) and Good Choice reached an all-time high of 539.4 billion won (US$412 million) in June.
These platforms saw the estimated value of payments stand at more than 2.5 trillion won in the January to June period of this year, up 81 percent year on year.
After social distancing rules were lifted, in particular, such figures have broken records month after month, reaching 458.6 billion won in April, 472.8 billion won in May and 539.4 billion won in June.
The estimated value of payments made at overseas booking service platforms such as Agoda, Booking.com, Hotels.com, Expedia and Trip.com stood at 243.4 billion won in June, a level equivalent to 76 percent of the value recorded in the pre-pandemic month of June 2019.
