SEOUL, May 27 (Korea Bizwire) The four major social insurances and minimum wage will be guaranteed for domestic workers in South Korea.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced that a revised enforcement ordinance of the Domestic Worker Act passed a Cabinet meeting on Thursday.

The revised enforcement ordinance stipulates that domestic workers should be protected by the four major social insurances: employment insurance, industrial accident compensation insurance, the national pension plan, and national health insurance.

In addition, domestic service providers should hire more than five regular domestic workers and pay them a salary exceeding the minimum wage.

Domestic workers will also be able to enjoy paid days off and leave on the basis of their actual working hours in line with the Labor Standards Act.

Under the revised enforcement ordinance, domestic service companies and domestic workers who want to provide nursing services to children younger than 12 must undergo a criminal background check.

If the criminal record check contains information that would disqualify a candidate, they cannot offer such services. If domestic service companies employ disqualified workers, they will be subject to a heavy fine.
