Pet Owners Splurge on Healthy Food, Supplements

SEOUL, Sept. 24 (Korea Bizwire) – With an increasing number of South Koreans households welcoming pets into their homes, the range and type of pet nutrition products available in the market is expanding.

Even products like vitamins and supplements for pets are being offered to pet owners. According to the e-commerce website Gmarket, sales of health products that allegedly help improve skin and joint conditions for dogs grew by 51 percent between January and August of this year compared to the same period last year. The growth has been steady, with sales volume jumping by 109 percent in 2016 and 45 percent last year.

Sales of vitamin products for dogs grew by 141 percent in 2016 (compared to the previous year) and 31 percent in 2017. Between January and August of this year, sales volumes grew by 49 percent. However, the trend was not limited to just dog products. Sales of vitamin and health products for cats grew by 118 percent between January and August of this year.

Last year, the growth rate was tabulated at 73 percent, while in 2016, sales grew by a staggering 610 percent.

Gmarket has set up “The Pet Shop,” an independent portal dedicated to pet-related goods, to sell discounted healthy pet snacks and hygiene products. In tune with the rising trend, the pet industry has been releasing various types of products that are in sync with the needs of the wide array of consumers.

Dongwon F&B recently released “Moisture Soup” featuring four types of moist pet food packed with nutrition and vitamins. The product, produced separately for cats and dogs, incorporates tuna, salmon, chicken and dried pollack as its main ingredients in an effort to provide a balanced meal that is high in nutrition for pets.

In addition, the product even includes ginseng extract. Similarly, Nestle’s cat food brand Purina released the product “Fancy Feast Medley,” available in three different flavors.
