SEOUL, Oct. 6 (Korea Bizwire)A petition that women’s mandatory military service needs to be introduced in addition to men’s was made once again on the Blue House home page. It was the second petition arguing the case after the first one made on the 26th of last month.

As of the 4th of this month, some 42,000 clicked “recommend” for this petition. Among the 16,000 petitions on the homepage, it attained the second largest number of “recommend” clicks.

As the murder of a child by teenage girls was a major issue recently, more than 270,000 people participated in the petition for the amendment of the juvenile law, recording the highest number of “recommend” clicks. After the Blue House replied to the petition last month, the issue of women’s obligatory military service has now become the de facto number one petition.

Its main point is that women also have to fulfill obligatory military service as men do, as the country’s low birth rate problem is deepening and both qualified men and women have to be given the same benefits such as extra points when applying for civil service jobs.

One petitioner argued that if female military conscription is not possible due to women’s physical differences, the current system of recruiting female military and police officers must be repealed as well. (Image: Yonhap)

Responsible officials, either cabinet members or senior secretaries of the Blue House, must make an official reply to petitions that have more than 200,000 “recommend” clicks within 30 days.

For this petition to be replied to, some 150,000 additional people need to participate by the 26th of this month.
