SEOUL, Oct. 30 (Korea Bizwire) – The pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry is making significant strides in enhancing its presence in the beauty sector, particularly in the realm of cosmetics.

Industry experts suggest that this strategic shift is aimed at attracting consumers and driving sales by emphasizing pharmaceutical companies’ focus on health.

In recent developments, the Yuhan Corporation declared its intention to bolster its involvement in beauty-related endeavors. The company unveiled a new vegan sun care brand called Dinsee on Friday. This product line includes four offerings, notably the “Dinsee Premium Vegan Mild Moist Sunscreen” and “Dinsee Premium Vegan Tone Up Sunscreen.” These products are crafted using rare vegan ingredients, such as snow lotus extract sourced from alpine regions 3,000 meters above sea level and extract from the Jeju starflower, which is native to Jeju Island.

Yuhan, a pharmaceutical entity, underscored its commitment to becoming a reputable and health-conscious beauty brand through stringent quality control practices.

Dongwha Pharmaceutical also made a notable announcement on Thursday, introducing a third-generation fucidin cream, known as “Fusid Biome Youth Cream.” The company is progressively expanding its footprint in the field of “derma cosmetics,” which marries medical technology with cosmetics.

This journey began with the launch of the fucidin cream in 2021, and last month, the company introduced the Fusidyne Derma Trouble Balancing Serum in collaboration with beauty creator ANDA. Fusid Biome Youth Cream is formulated with Fusidum-Biome, a culture solution known for enhancing skin elasticity and self-regeneration.

In response to this industry trend, an industry expert commented, “Pharmaceutical companies are increasingly focusing on the beauty sector to boost their sales. While the traditional beauty industry concentrates on aesthetics, derma cosmetics distinguish themselves by emphasizing the concept of healthy beauty and promoting their products with this message.”

Since its introduction, Fusid Cream has recorded remarkable success, with 1.57 million units sold and generating sales exceeding 20 billion won.

Another pharmaceutical firm, PharmGen Science, ventured into international markets by exporting 20,000 products, including shampoo and conditioner, from its healthcare brand Neomesel to the Vietnamese healthcare distributor Medicare. Additionally, the company is actively promoting its cosmetics line.

Notably, Hugel, renowned for its Botox products, achieved top honors in the derma cosmetics category for the fifth consecutive year at the ’2023 Brand of the Year Awards,’ organized by the Korea Consumer Forum, with its derma cosmetics brand Wellage.

Wellage’s Real Hyaluronic Capsule has been exceptionally well-received, surpassing 60 million cumulative sales since its debut in 2017.
