SEOUL, Sept. 14 (Korea Bizwire) — Law enforcement agencies in South Korea have introduced special ID codes for animal abuse to quickly address the increasing number of animal abuse cases.
The National Police Agency said Monday that it had issued a special 112 police emergency line identification code for animal abuse in January this year. There are currently 112 ID codes consisting of six main categories and 58 sub-categories.
The six main categories include felonies (murder, robbery), other crimes, order maintenance, traffic, other police tasks, and other agencies. Animal abuse has been added under the ‘other crimes’ category.
The new addition of the ID code doesn’t change the way of reporting an animal abuse case. It can be reported simply by dialing 112.
The police said that an increasing number of animal abuse cases are being reported each year as public interest in animals continues to rise. Violations of the Animal Protection Act rose from 69 cases in 2010 to 914 cases in 2019.
