SEOUL, Dec. 6 (Korea Bizwire)The National Office of Investigation at the National Police Agency said Sunday that it will start using a new database system for investigation records on unsolved murder cases that was built last month.

After the statute of limitations on murder cases was abolished thanks to the revision of the Act on Sexual Crime of Violence and the Criminal Procedure Code, the police have promoted electronic documentation as a way to improve investigation efficiency as well as to preserve investigation records with respect to unsolved murder cases.

Registered in this system are a vast amount of data on 267 unsolved murder cases that the ‘important unsolved case-dedicated investigation teams’ at the nation’s city and provincial police stations are investigating, including 1.48 million pages of investigation records, 17,000 images, 700 gigabytes of video data and 7 gigabytes of voice data.

Moreover, with the introduction of an optical character recognition program that can extract scanned images into text, the system ensures a fast and effective search of the cases, while making it easier for city and provincial police stations to exchange information.

The National Office of Investigation has traced the unsolved murder cases by establishing important unsolved case-dedicated investigation teams at 17 city and provincial police agencies since Dec. 2011.

Thanks to such efforts, a total of 85 suspects in 58 unsolved cases have been arrested thus far.
