SEOUL, June 14 (Korea Bizwire)Police plan to expand the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-based voice recognition systems when investigating cases of sexual violence.

The National Police Agency said Monday it will introduce an AI-based voice recognition system at 38 police stations in second-tier regions, Women and Youth Divisions at city and municipal-level police agencies, and 32 Sunflower Centers by the end of this year.

Sunflower Centers offer legal, medical and psychological assistance to victims of sexual assault.

In the past, when police detectives received testimony from victims, they usually had to type the victim’s responses to questions, making it difficult for them to fully concentrate on the victim.

The AI-based voice recognition system will help them fully focus on interviews with victims, while automatically recording and classifying the content of interviews.

In 2020, the police introduced a trial system equipped with a manual production function for 59 police stations.

This year, the tool designed to record testimonies from victims will be upgraded through AI technology. In addition, phone record files confiscated as evidence will automatically be converted to text without the need to use stenographic records.
