Popularity of Surfing, Yachting Boosts Marine Sports Sales

SEOUL, Oct. 18 (Korea Bizwire)Marine sports such as surfing, scuba diving, yachting and others have gained popularity in recent years, data showed Monday.

KB Kookmin Card Co., a credit card arm of KB Financial Group Inc., analized the four-year data of credit card sales related to marine sports, which showed a 140 percent increase from July 1 to October 10, 2019 compared to the same period this year.

Among sales, surfing accounted for 48 percent of the total in July and August, while scuba diving was most popular in the September to November period, accounting for 31 percent of total sales.

In Gangwon Province, surfing comprised 65 percent of all marine sports sales. On Jeju Island, scuba diving and yachting accounted for 34 percent and 27 percent, respectively, of all marine sports sales.

Sorted by age, marine sports sales among customers in their 20s jumped the highest by 400 percent from 2019.

The data also showed that 71 percent of surfing sales came from the 20s and 30s age group, while 62 percent of scuba diving sales came from the 40s and 50s age group and 66 percent of yachting sales came from customers over 40 years of age.
