JEJU, March 24 (Korea Bizwire) — The population of roe deer on Jeju Island is set for recovery following recent bans on poaching.
The Jeju provincial government reported that there were about 4,400 roe deer on the island as of last year, which was a 15.8 percent increase over the previous year.
Roe deer had been designated as hazardous wild animals in June 2013 after they were suspected of eating farm crops, and were allowed to be killed.
Since then, the numbers plunged from 8,000 in 2015 to 3,800 by 2018. Between 2013 and 2018, an additional 2,400 deer died from road kills.
The province excluded them from the list of hazardous wild animals on July 1 last year.
