SEOUL, Aug. 23 (Korea Bizwire) – Porsche’s first all-electric sports car, the Taycan, has returned with significant improvements in performance and convenience features, marking its first major update since its introduction to the Korean market four years ago.
At a launch event held on August 22 at the Grand Hyatt Seoul, Porsche Korea unveiled nine new models, including the updated Taycan, Taycan 4S, Turbo, and Turbo S, as well as the Cross Turismo variant.
The new Taycan boasts impressive acceleration, with the base model now capable of reaching 100 km/h from a standstill in just 4.8 seconds, shaving 0.6 seconds off its predecessor’s time. The top-tier Taycan Turbo S achieves this feat in a mere 2.4 seconds, 0.4 seconds faster than before.
These performance gains are attributed to newly developed, aerodynamically optimized wheels and low-rolling-resistance tires, which come standard across all models.
Charging speeds have also seen a significant boost. All models can now charge from 10% to 80% battery capacity in just 18 minutes, halving the previous charging time of 37 minutes.
Depending on the model, the maximum driving range now extends up to 500 km. This represents an increase of 197 km, or 65%, over the previous version, thanks to an enlarged battery capacity of up to 105 kWh.
LG Energy Solution continues to supply the batteries for the Taycan. Lee Seok-jae, a director at Porsche Korea, emphasized the extensive battery safety testing conducted in collaboration with LG Energy Solution.
“We’ve enhanced not only battery thermal management but also cooling performance, optimizing the system for Korea’s distinct four-season climate,” Lee stated.
The Taycan’s popularity in Korea is evident, with 1,805 units sold last year, a 60% increase from a year earlier. This performance has elevated Korea to Porsche’s fifth-largest global market, following China and the United States.
Recognizing the Korean market’s importance, Kevin Giek, vice president of the Taycan model line at Porsche AG, and Alexander Fabig, vice president of Individualization and Classic at Porsche AG, attended the launch event in person.
To commemorate Porsche Korea’s 10th anniversary, a limited edition Taycan Turbo K-Edition was also unveiled. Only 50 units will be available in Korea, featuring unique color combinations inspired by Korean culture and nature.
In a broader industry context, all 21 domestic and international brands manufacturing and selling electric vehicles in Korea have now disclosed their battery manufacturers, including recent additions Rolls-Royce and MINI.
This move towards transparency comes as consumers call for even more detailed information, including specifics on cathode materials.
As interest in electric vehicle batteries grows, LG Energy Solution has introduced B-Lifecare, an app-based monitoring service.
This allows drivers to receive real-time updates on their battery’s condition, including temperature, voltage differences between cells, and degradation status, boosting safety and user experience in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
