SEOUL, Feb. 10 (Korea Bizwire) – Gunsan Regional Oceans & Fisheries Administration is planning a 1.5 billion won (US$ 1.3 million) project to install five light beacons off the coast of Gyeokpo-ri, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, said the administration on February 9.

The light beacons, navigation facilities for maritime guidance on rocky hazards, will be built in form of lotus flowers. Since the Gyeokpo-ri sea is presumed to be the setting for the Korean classic novel Simcheongjeon, the lotus flower shaped beacons are expected to make Gyeokpo-ri more of a tourist destination.

According to the administration, the Korean government’s 2015 budget for maritime navigation facilities is 4.9 billion won (US$ 4.5 million) which is an increase of 80 percent over the 2014 budget. Alongside the five beacons, the Gunsan administration plans to install beacons marking fish farms and lighting systems with sequenced flashing lights similar to those used at airports, to help ships navigate in the dark.
