SEOUL, Aug. 8 (Korea Bizwire)POSCO Co., South Korea’s top steelmaker, has developed a new construction technology that allows builders to add up to three stories at a time.

The company said Wednesday that the “P-Box Pillar and Reinforced Concrete Beam Jointing Method,” developed with its customers, has been designated as a new technology for construction by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The technique is a method of joining horizontal reinforced concrete beams to P-Box steel pillars filled with concrete.

Unlike the existing reinforced concrete method, in which floors are added one at a time, P-Box pillars are 15 meters tall, equivalent to three stories, which can greatly reduce the construction time.

It is expected that construction costs will be reduced by 10 to 15 percent and carbon emissions will be reduced by more than 1.5 percent for projects that employ the new technology.

High performance steel for Architecture 600, or HSA600, which is used in the P-Box, is POSCO’s World Top Premium (WTP) product that guarantees 600MPa tensile strength to minimize deformation during bending and welding.

The P-Box, designated as a new construction technology, will be given an eight-year period of protection.

If MOLIT recommends that new technology can be applied to owners first, and uses this technology for pre-qualification for bidding participation in construction work, it can receive additional points.

The technology has already been used on more than 11 construction projects, including a new apartment complex in Hanam, Gyeonggi Province.
