SEJONG, May 13 (Korea Bizwire)POSCO Engineering & Construction Co., the construction arm of South Korea’s leading steelmaker, POSCO, had the highest number of workplace fatalities among local builders last year, government data showed Monday.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said 10 workers died at construction sites run by POSCO E&C after analyzing cases that were confirmed as industrial accidents in 2018.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. ranked second with seven deaths, followed by GS Engineering & Construction Co. and Bando Engineering & Construction Co., each with four deaths.

The ministry said 485 construction workers died on the job in 2018, down 21 from the previous year. The leading cause of worker deaths in the construction industry was falls, accounting for 60 percent of the total deaths last year.

By region, the highest number of fatal accidents occurred in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, south of Seoul.

The ministry said it will release workplace fatality data every month starting in July to emphasize safety on construction sites.
