SEOUL, Feb. 8 (Korea Bizwire)An ad hoc presidential healthcare subcommittee has announced a medical diagnostic and consulting system which can predict the onset of illness based on hospital records, prescription history, one’s individual genetic database and information on day-to-day habits and behaviors will begin development.

This system is included in the subcommittee’s core project, the “Healthcare Big Data Showcase”. A panel composed of 500 to 1,000 members who agree to personal information collection will be assembled for the purpose of finding ways in which health-related big data can be effectively used, and the big data applications will be examined for realistic business models.

At a meeting held on February 7, the subcommittee agreed to an organizational blueprint for this year targeting job creation in the healthcare industry and the extension of South Korea’s health life expectancy.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare and relevant institutions had previously set goals of increasing healthy life expectancy from the 73 years recorded in 2015 to 76 by 2022, and growing jobs from 790,000 in 2016 to 1 million by 2022.

The subcommittee added that public opinion will be taken into consideration and weighted in regard to the various aspects of this year’s plan (including the Healthcare Big Data Showcase) and be funded by the government.

To attain a leading position in pharmaceuticals, the subcommittee has listed greater collaboration between institutions and departments as crucial. In particular, the incorporation of artificial technology into R&D of pharmaceuticals and drug repositioning and the establishment of “smart” clinical centers have been tabbed as matters of great significance going forward.

The subcommittee will look to clear a path to market for cutting-edge medical equipment with advanced technological capabilities by revising standing laws.
