BUSAN, Oct. 16 (Korea Bizwire) – Visitors to this year’s star-studded Busan International Film Festival had the pleasant surprise of meeting none other than President Moon Jae-in over the weekend, as the commander-in-chief paid an unexpected visit to the renowned annual film festival in the port city on the south coast of South Korea.
Moon’s surprise visit before the screening of the movie “Missing” on the fourth day of the festival was met with cheers from his supporters, with many film enthusiasts getting up out of their seats and taking their phones out for a picture to capture the rare moment.
Moon, who was sporting an orange shirt and a grey jacket, shook hands with members of a cheering crowd, with pictures of him and other attendees at the festival soon spreading across social media.
It has been reported that Moon sat in the middle of the theater between two film students, alongside Do Jong-hwan, the minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Park Soo-hyun, who is the spokesperson of the Blue House.
The movie “Missing” centers around the story of a single working mother who loses her daughter to a babysitter, which also sheds light on the unfair aspects of South Korean society.
After the end of the screening, Moon joined the director, actors and actresses on stage where he shared his thoughts on the movie.
“Jisun and Hanmae are both employers as well as employees, and assailants as well as victims, and we learn that both women find themselves in a similar situation. I also felt the title of the movie ‘Missing’ had double meanings, reflecting the marginalized stance of women in our society,” Moon said.
Moon also added that more people would have watched the movie if it was released this year when more attention is being paid to women’s rights in society, prompting the audience to laugh.
After the screening, Moon traveled to the Busan Cinema Center in the Haeundae District to view the VR-based South Korean animation ‘Bohwagak’ for a few minutes with the help of volunteers, with a crowd of hundreds of people following his every step.
Moon was showered with positive comments such as ‘I love you,’ and ‘Thank you,’ from the crowd.
According to the latest poll by Realmeter, Moon’s approval rating currently stands in the high 60s.
