SEOUL, Feb. 27 (Korea Bizwire)The price of goat meat is surging as it is becoming known as the best alternative to dog meat.

The Korea Black Goat Association reported that the price of black goat meat reached 19,000 won (US$14.40) per kilogram as of Feb. 13, up 73 percent from last July.

The price of three-month-old female goat meat cost 30,000 won per kilogram, more than doubling over the same period.

The number of goats being raised on livestock farms in South Korea, however, stood at 443,000 in 2021, down by 23 percent from 2019, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Industry sources argue that a drop in goat meat prices following an increase in imports prompted the government to support goat farms that would have otherwise gone out of business.

Since then, the industry has been recovering slowly.
