SUWON, Dec. 18 (Korea Bizwire) Gyeonggi Agricultural Research & Extension Services has developed an eco-friendly extermination technology to eradicate houseflies, often a problem for livestock farmers, using natural predators.

The research center entered an agreement to transfer the breeding technology of ‘Carcinops pumilio’, a natural predator of houseflies, to the private research laboratory Korea Beneficial Insects Lab on December 17.

The lab will develop a mass production system to provide Carcinops pumilio to livestock farms and start commercializing them.

This insect, which was developed as a natural predator of houseflies by Gyeonggi Agricultural Research & Extension Services has a habit of eating the eggs of houseflies, unlike other natural predators that eat fly pupae.

Gyeonggi Agricultural Research & Extension Services explained that Carcinops pumilio will be effective when used in tandem with existing natural predators or houseflies, since both eggs and pupae can be exterminated at one time.

Flies typically stress livestock and reduce productivity by causing illness.

Although more than 70 percent of the extermination of houseflies relied on pesticide in the past, the usage of pesticide will be strictly prohibited in the future.

The housefly problem at livestock farms can be solved when this extermination technology using natural predators becomes widespread.

The head of Gyeonggi Agricultural Research & Extension Services said the institute will keep working to develop eco-friendly agriculture.
