SEOUL, March 31 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s public and private sectors will team up to develop a wireless charging infrastructure for electric trucks.
The Ministry of Environment on Wednesday signed a business agreement with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the Korea Automobile Environmental Association and e-commerce giant Coupang Inc.
Under terms of the agreement, the parties will establish a system to promote the shift of trucks that generate more greenhouse gases than passenger vehicles into electric trucks.
The ministry plans to establish wireless charging infrastructure facilities at Coupang’s two logistics centers in Seoul by the end of this year, as well as to carry out a demonstration project to analyze operational effects over the next three years.
Wireless charging infrastructure facility refers to the facility that allows electric trucks to be charged wirelessly while being loaded with cargo. The ministry plans to install and operate a total of ten 22-kilowatt chargers.
Coupang will replace its internal combustion engine trucks with electric ones, while the Seoul Metropolitan Government will provide subsidies and administrative support to promote the purchase of electric trucks.
The Korea Automobile Environmental Association will be responsible for the operation and management of the wireless charging trial project.
