SEOUL, Nov. 30 (Korea Bizwire)Civil servant is the most sought-after job among South Korean adults, though most of them aim to take jobs as office workers for practical reasons, a poll showed Friday.

Of the 1,143 job seekers and salaried people questioned, the largest portion — 26.7 percent — said they want to work for the government and public institutions regardless of the reality, according to the survey conducted by online job portal Saramin.

Another 16.2 percent said they hope to run restaurants or other independent operations, followed by 15 percent of respondents wishing to land office jobs.

Job security is the top consideration for those who want to be public servants or office workers, according to the findings.

“The results give a glimpse into a prevailing climate among both job seekers and holders of office jobs that emphasizes job security,” a Saramin official said.

Civil servants in South Korea are usually allowed to work until retirement age, which entices many college graduates to apply for positions at central and provincial governments.

The survey also showed that considering the reality, nearly 50 percent of the surveyed have decided to become office workers, trailed by civil servants, with 32.2 percent, and technicians with 15.1 percent.

The survey was conducted on 404 job seekers and 739 adults with office jobs. Of the 404 job seekers polled, 66.6 percent said the jobs they hope for are different from the jobs they try to land, with 75.5 percent of the office job holders saying so.
