NEW DELHI, May 11 (Korea Bizwire) – The Korean Embassy and the Korean Culture Center in India have been holding a quiz competition for locals on subjects related to Korea, its history, and culture. The competition, in which 12,000 contestants participated, has been ongoing for the past month.

The Korean Culture Center collaborated with 50 local schools and began the qualifying rounds on April 5. The final rounds took place yesterday, with the 20 remaining candidates squaring off.

The final quiz questions were quite challenging, but competitors were well prepared. ‘What is the name of the highway that connects Seoul and Busan?’ and ‘What was President Kim Dae-jung’s North Korea policy called?’ were some of the questions.

The first prize went to Varun Khunara, a 15-year-old student.

“I have always been interested in Korea’s long history and culture. I’ve studied through books and internet research in preparation for this competition,” said the winner. “I only know how to say ‘hello’ in Korean, so it was hard for me to learn Korean names and titles.”

Khunara was also given an opportunity to visit Korea as an additional prize.

“The competition was important in that it brought about more interest among young students in India. We’ll make sure that more students can participate in next year’s competitions,” said an official from the Korean Culture Center.
